Welcome to Our Cognitive Surplus

Hello and welcome to Our Cognitive Surplus. The name (and corresponding idea) is slightly borrowed from a post by Clay Shirky. Such a good post that it actually inspired me to buy his book. There will be a link somewhere. You will find it.

Purpose

The achievable goal is to use this blog as somewhere to archive my own cognitive surplus. The middle-of-the-road goal is to to find some people who are interested in the sorts of things I have to talk about so I can interact with them – then my idling becomes active rather than passive. The aspirational goal, and the reason this is Our Cognitive Surplus rather than My Cognitive Surplus, is that I hope readers like you can be users as well. I want you to put some of your own mental energy into this project. To facilitate that I may have to dream up some forums, but we’ll jump that hurdle when (read: if) we get there.

Topics

The obvious question is “What am I going to be talking about?” But, unfortunately, that doesn’t come with an obvious answer aside from things that are interesting to me. If everything works out with some magic2.0 the things that interest me will also interest you.

What I can tell you is some things that I will be talking about! I will talk about intellectual property law, religion, philosophy, Australian politics and current events. I will post some short stories and I will link to things that I think are funny as hell. I’ll probably also do some diary style blogging about my real life and I’m sure my law thesis will rate some mentions as well. Other than that – who knows what will happen!

Plan of attack

  • Say hello with this post
  • Learn how to use the software
  • Import previous blog posts from other sources to build up something of an archive – that way you can know what I’m about
  • Start generating new content
  • Branch out into some other forms of media – I’m currently a big fan of www.youtube.com
  • See what happens from there!
